Bathtub Replacement in New Rochelle, NY

Free quotes for bathtub replacement in New Rochelle, NY.

Freestanding cast-iron slipper tub painted slate blue on a herringbone marble floor, with a floor-mounted brass filler and a teak stool

Bathtub replacement in New Rochelle, NY means removing a worn, leaking or ill-fitting tub and setting a new one on a floor, drain and valve that can carry it, in a city where the median home was built in 1955 (Census ACS 2020-2024). Filled, the tub is the heaviest fixture in most bathrooms: Kohler's 5.5-foot cast-iron Bellwether is 380 lbs dry, its 49 gal of water add about 408 lb at 8.329 lb per gallon, and the joists carry close to 788 lb before a bather climbs in. We choose the tub with that load in hand, then settle its material, its filler or valve, the surround and any glass, and the sections below take each in turn, along with the cases where a refinish still makes sense.

Typical published range

$2,101 - $9,753 per tub, installed (HomeAdvisor national, 2026)

Full pricing guide

No survey publishes a New Rochelle tub price, so national ranges set the frame. HomeAdvisor's 2026 guide averages a bathtub replacement at $5,927, with a normal range of $2,101 to $9,753; HomeGuide's 2025 guide gives $1,500 to $8,000 including the tub and installation. Material moves the number most: HomeGuide's price by material runs $600 to $3,000 for cast iron and $2,000 to $10,000 for stone, and Fixr's New York State page carries a freestanding tub line at $6,910. Labor costs more here; BLS 2025 wage data, via O*NET, put the New York metro's median plumber wage at $37.79 an hour against $30.67 nationally. Publication 862 lists the complete replacement of a tub as a capital improvement, so no sales tax is collected from you once you complete Form ST-124, while the repair of a tub is taxable at New Rochelle's 8.375%. Our New Rochelle cost guide lays these sources side by side.

Our specification names the tub by make and model, with its size, drain side, material, empty weight and capacity, so the floor check and the contract describe the same object. Kohler's enameled cast-iron Bellwether alcove bath, model K-837, measures 60 x 30-1/4 inches, a size Kohler calls industry standard, with an integral apron that simplifies alcove installation. City Code section 242-12A(1) still lists a 1 1/2-inch minimum for a bathtub's trap, and we size the drain to it. Where a shower head sits over the tub, the valve meets ASSE 1016 as a pressure-balance, thermostatic or combination type, with its limit stop set at installation, usually to 120 degrees F; a tub-only filler gets an ASSE 1070 temperature-limiting device instead. While the walls are open we add solid blocking for grab bars, and we list the surround's backer board, membrane and tile by name.

Because a tub swap touches plumbing, the Building Official cannot waive its permit under City Code section 111-9C; that discretion is reserved for alterations that leave electrical, plumbing and heating systems alone. Under section 242-6, no City official may issue the plumbing permit to anyone but a registered master plumber holding a Westchester County certificate of qualification. Our master plumber files the plan and the notification card, and the new drain and supply stay exposed until the Plumbing Inspector has tested them and signed off (section 242-10E(1)). Applications filed since December 31, 2025 follow the 2025 Uniform Code, and a permit becomes invalid if work has not begun within 90 days of issue (section 111-11C), so we file once the tub is on order. The CitySquared application and the order of inspections are walked through in our guide to New Rochelle permits and inspections.

New Rochelle's housing shapes the job. ACS 2020-2024 tables B25035 and B25034 put the city's median year built at 1955 and count 32.5% of units from 1939 or earlier, so the joists under a tub may be the original ones; we check their size, span and condition before a heavier tub goes in. An asbestos survey is required under Industrial Code Rule 56 ahead of renovation wherever a building's original construction began before January 1, 1974, and EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule applies once the work disturbs more than six square feet of paint in a room of a pre-1978 home. Apartments are a large part of the city: 38.1% of units sit in buildings of 20 or more units, where the plumbing follows the 2025 Plumbing Code of New York State and, in a co-op or condo, the board's rules come first. If you want the decade-by-decade counts, the New Rochelle housing data page lists them.

To start, send us the tub's length and width, the wall its drain sits on, a photograph of the room and the year the house was built, if you know it. On the visit we measure the alcove or the open floor, look at the joists from below where the ceiling allows, and note the valve and the water heater. Our written estimate then lists the tub, the filler or valve, the surround, any framing work and the permit as separate lines, priced against the published ranges above.

When a tub needs replacing rather than another refinish

Most tubs show the problem before it reaches the ceiling below. On a first visit we check for the conditions below. Any one of them is a reason to price a replacement against a refinish, and the cost of each path is set out in the decision section further down this page.

  • The enamel has worn through near the drain, or an old reglaze is peeling after the 10 to 15 years Angi gives the method.
  • A stain has appeared on the ceiling below the tub, or the caulk joint where the tub meets the wall keeps reopening.
  • An acrylic or fiberglass tub flexes or creaks when you step in, which points to the support underneath it.
  • The tub-shower valve has no pressure-balance or thermostatic cartridge, so the temperature jumps when someone runs another tap.
  • The tub is too shallow to soak in; American Standard's 60 x 30 acrylic model lists about 12 inches of water depth, measured to the overflow.
  • Someone in the house now needs a grab bar at the tub, and the wall behind the tile has no blocking to hold one.

A tub that is sound but tired can be refinished. One that leaks, flexes or no longer suits the people using it is a replacement, or a conversion to a shower. If you are weighing the second, the shower pan, drain and glass are covered on our tub-to-shower conversion page.

Cast iron, acrylic and stone resin: the filled weight on your joists

Material decides the weight, the feel of the surface and how the tub is set. Kohler describes enameled cast iron as extra-thick enamel over iron made partly from recycled iron, and its model K-847, a 5.5-foot Bellwether, lists a dry weight of 380 lbs and a capacity of 49 gal. Water at 70 degrees F weighs 8.329 lb per gallon (USGS), so filling it adds about 408 lb of water. An acrylic tub of similar size, American Standard's 60 x 30 integral-apron model, ships at 97.0 lb and holds 48.0 gal, about 400 lb of water and roughly 497 lb in all, against roughly 788 lb for the cast-iron bath. Kohler calls acrylic strong and flex-resistant, with a finish that resists chipping.

Stone resin and cast-stone tubs are solid through, as MTI describes its SculptureStone material, but the makers' pages we checked publish no weights, so we take the figure from the spec sheet of the exact model before it is ordered. Kohler tells buyers to confirm that the floor will carry the full bath's weight. We look at the joists from below or through the open floor, record their size, span and condition, and reinforce the framing where the load calls for it. The floor tile around the tub has its own stiffness limit, L/360 for ceramic tile and L/720 for natural stone, so a marble floor beside a heavy tub needs the stiffer frame.

Tub fillers, scald limits and the hot water a deep soak needs

A freestanding tub needs its own filler, and Kohler offers floor-mount bath fillers alongside deck- and wall-mount faucets. A floor-mount filler rises from the floor, so we fix its position on the drawings, rough in its supply lines with the drain and leave both open for the Plumbing Inspector before the floor is closed. The scald standard follows the fixture. A tub with a shower head runs through an ASSE 1016 valve, and ASSE notes that the limit stop must be set by the installer to the temperature the local code mandates, usually 120 degrees F. A tub-only filler falls under ASSE 1070, the standard for temperature-limiting devices at fixtures such as bathtubs, and ASSE's scope note says those devices do not deal with thermal shock, which is why we put a filler that carries a hand shower on a compensating valve.

Hot water is the other half of a soaking tub. The Department of Energy's water-heating sheet tells buyers to judge a heater by its first-hour rating, the hot water it delivers in an hour from a full tank, rather than by tank size, and to pick one whose rating comes within about 2 gallons of the busiest hour's demand; in its table a bath alone draws 20 gallons. Kohler pairs the floor check with a check that your water heater will provide enough hot water. Depth is measured inside the tub, from the base to the overflow drain, so a deeper soak means more water to heat and more weight on the floor.

Alcove replacement: tiling flange, surround height, backer and glass

An alcove tub, walled on three sides, is the layout Kohler calls ideal for tub and shower combinations. A new alcove tub has a flange that sits behind the wall finish, so the lower courses of the surround come off, and we decide at that point whether any of the old tile is worth keeping. With a shower head over the tub, Section R327.2 of the model code behind New York's 2025 Residential Code requires non-absorbent walls to not less than 6 feet above the floor, and NKBA's planning guideline carries the waterproof material to a 72-inch height.

The backer is cement board, fiber-cement or glass-mat gypsum, the materials the model code names for tub and shower walls, and we waterproof its face, because DOE's guidance notes that cement board resists water but is not waterproof. On an exterior wall, DOE's Building America guidance calls for insulation without gaps and a sealed air barrier behind the tub, warning that skipping it leaves tubs and bathrooms that are always cold; NOAA's 1991-2020 normals put January's mean at Westchester County Airport below freezing. Under Section R324.4.5, a glass panel near the tub counts as a hazardous location when its lower edge sits under 60 inches above the standing surface, so it must be safety glazing carrying a permanent mark, and we measure for it only after the tile is finished.

Refinish, replace in the alcove, or set a freestanding tub

We weigh three paths for an existing tub. They differ in what they fix, how long they last and how much of the room they disturb. The figures below are national survey ranges; we price your room in writing after the visit.

Refinish the tub you have

Reglazing renews the surface of a sound tub without moving it or opening a wall, and Angi's 2026 guide says a reglaze lasts 10 to 15 years, against three to five years for a liner. It does not fix a leak, a failing drain, a flexing base or a tub of the wrong size, and it leaves the valve and the surround as they are. It suits a cast-iron tub whose body is sound and whose size still works.

Replace it in the same alcove

A new alcove tub keeps the drain and valve close to where they are, so the plumbing work stays small and the drawings simple. The lower surround has to come off to set the new tub's flange, which makes this the moment to renew the backer and membrane, add blocking for grab bars and change the valve to a pressure-balance or thermostatic cartridge.

Move to a freestanding tub

A freestanding tub is finished on all sides and needs clear floor around it, its own filler and a floor that can carry it. A floor-mount filler brings its supply lines up through the floor, so its position is fixed on the drawings before any tile is set, and a cast-iron model can put roughly 788 lb on the joists once filled. It suits a larger room where the tub is no longer also the shower.

Questions

Bathtub Replacement FAQs

How does the cost of refinishing compare with replacing a tub?

Angi's 2026 refinishing guide puts the national average at $484, with most homeowners paying $337 to $631 and cast iron at $350 to $600. Replacement is a different job: beyond the tub, HomeAdvisor's 2026 figures put removal of the old tub at $150 to $4,500 and plumbing upgrades at $400 to $1,900, and HomeGuide installs a standard alcove tub for $1,500 to $2,000 and a freestanding or clawfoot tub for $2,200 to $5,000. We list each line separately so two quotes can be read side by side.

Does replacing a bathtub need a permit in New Rochelle?

In most cases, yes. City Code section 242-7B lets repairs and replacements of plumbing proceed without filing drawings unless new soil, waste or vent lines are proposed, but section 242-8 still lists a charge for the replacement of fixtures and the certificate of approval that follows. Section 242-5A(1) bars anyone without a Westchester County certificate of qualification, registered with the Plumbing Inspector, from altering a plumbing system. Moving the drain means new waste piping, so drawings go to the Bureau of Buildings for approval before work begins.

Can a tub be replaced in a New Rochelle co-op or condo?

Usually, once the building agrees. In a co-op the proprietary lease and house rules govern work inside the apartment; in a condo, the by-laws and house rules do. New York's Court of Appeals looked at such a clause in 1990: the shareholder's lease required the co-op's prior written consent before anyone altered or added to the building's risers or pipes, and the court deferred to a board acting in good faith within its authority. We read your building's terms before we price, and we keep the new drain on the existing line wherever the layout allows.

Should grab bars go in when the tub is replaced?

Yes, while the wall is open. The U.S. Access Board's guide to the 2010 ADA Standards, which we use as reference dimensions in private homes, places tub grab bars at least 24 inches long at the control and head ends, plus two on the back wall: the upper 33 to 36 inches high and the lower 8 to 10 inches above the rim. Each must withstand 250 lbs. We add blocking for all of them now, even if the bars come later; the rest of an accessible room is laid out on our accessible bathroom page.
